Vin is an ex-street kid who lost her family and ended up being taken in by a Mistborn (someone who can ingest metals and use them to varying effects - see the allomancy post!) named Kelsier and his gang when she was sixteen. She joined their group in attempting to take down the Lord Ruler and topple his Empire, getting the supply of atium (again, see the allomancy post, but this basically allows someone to see the future in reading what someone will do, useful in a fight!) She joins to help them spy on the nobles by overhearing gossip to pass along to the crew, and in being thus able to spread their own rumors at the gatherings the balls she attends. She ends up later assisting in running the kingdom in a more bodyguard/assassin sort of role as things go on, as she has been trained in being a Mistborn herself with Kelsier.
Personality-wise, initially, she is very cautious and quieter. She takes time to trust, to open up to Kelsier and his crew. Takes time to figure out the contrasting identities as she works as a spy, as she becomes a Mistborn, as a woman, and as she gets older. She has no qualms about killing if it comes down to it, having experienced a lot of death while living on the streets. She loves Elend, a noble she met during her time as a spy, and feels bad for lying to him during that period. She is very fiercely protective of those in the crew that she has opened up to over time. She is, however, more cautious and realistic in comparison to Elend, being far more idealistic and more of a dreamer in comparison, due to their differing upbringings and all. She hates reading and only does so for research if it is important, never understanding how Sazed and Elend can do so for hours on end, for pleasure even.
